If you ever talk to an old time assayer, they paid a lot more attention to manually monitoring the cupellation process. Making fine adjustments to the temperature, watching for the blick, etc.
One tool they used to accomplish this is the Cupel Mirror which allows you to easily see down into the bowl of the cupel and keep track of the lead absorption and predict the time remaining.
We have seen some of the larger commercial laboratories and mining companies return to using a cupel mirror, and as a result we have started producing these again in two sizes.
