Determing temperature of pot refining furnace

Many pot refining furnaces don't include a temperature indicator. Temperature can be monitored in a couple of ways:
1) you can drill a hole in the side and use a digital or analog thermocouple and meter. This will tell you the chamber temperature, but you may need to wait a period of time for the temperature of the crucible and melt to come up to the chamber temperature:

You can also directly measure the temperature of the crucible, or the melt itself with an optical (IR) temperature gun:

This has the advantage of actually giving you the melt temperature in real time.
